Wishful Thinking

One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple. psalm twenty seven:four

Crossfit has a powerful way of taking an area of your fitness that has been neglected, and reminding you how neglected it is. This can come in the form of strength, conditioning, mobility or even mentally. When any of these make themselves known, it’s never a good time. What’s funny about Crossfit is that all of the areas mentioned always show up! Do you know what that means? It means you are constantly reminded that you still have that thing to sort out, and you need to attend to it immediately. So what do you do? After the WOD, you decide you’re going to make it happen! Today is the day that you are going to sort this out once and for all. Your never going to miss a snatch PR again because your thoracic mobility is going to be so supple! 5 minutes on a foam roller later, you feel good, and you meander out of the box. You accomplished so much today! Just wait, tomorrow will be twice as long. I am going to get after this mobility thing finally… Then two weeks go by and you haven’t so much as look at a lacrosse ball. You had every intention to give that darn mobility some attention, but you just were so ‘busy’.

What about the areas of your spiritual life that you know you need to work on? You know you need to control your anger a bit more. You know that you need to be more patient with people. You swear you’re going to be sure you’re a person of integrity. And here is the big one, (that would likely handle the areas you are trying to grow in anyways) spending time with Jesus. To be like Mary and sit at His feet to just be with Him. That is how you are going to address those things that you continue to find yourself yearning growth in. And you know that, you know that if you would just spend time with Jesus, you would find yourself experiencing the growth you desire.

You so deeply desire to be near to Him. You want to know scripture. You want to have an intimacy like David did. But yet, all you do is want. Having a heart after God’s is great thing, but going from desire to action will be the x-factor. What kind of affect will your decisions today have on your future self? Will you be nearer to God, stagnant, or further away in six months time?

Take it back to your fitness for a moment. You can’t just wish yourself to be more supple. Reading about mobility, watching MobilityWOD everyday, nor following RomWOD on Instagram is going to do anything for you. You need to move yourself from wanting to change the things that need to be changed to actually changing them! Small changes today will lead to big changes tomorrow. Start small. But everyday, do something that pushes you further to where you want to end up!

In your pursuit of Christ, you don’t have to go form 0-60 in .5 seconds either. You don’t need to break out the pens, highlighters, commentaries, and Greek lexicons. Do this though. Start today. Start something. Anything that is going to cause you to grow into the person God has made you to be. Turn of Ryan’s Roses in the morning and put on a sermon instead. Spend 15 minutes off Instagram, and pick up a devotional. Or better yet, stop hitting snooze and spend that 8 extra minutes of ’sleep’ in the Word. Whatever it is, do something that will cause you to grow in Christ.

With that in mind, let me make this bold statement. The above mentioned activities are just as fruitful as scrolling through your social media platform of choice if you do them outside of getting closer to God. You can easily fall prey to the trap of routine and religion by doing anything good out of obligation. It must come from a desire to know God, be near Him, and becoming more like His Son. If you read your Bible, devotional, or book to gain knowledge, you will have just that, knowledge. If that knowledge doesn’t lead you to a place of heart transformation where you think, speak, act, and love more like Jesus, it was all for not.

Don’t wait wait any longer! He is eagerly waiting, watching the horizon for you to break over the crest of the hill. His wants to spend time with you! Watch and see what God does when you enter into His presence each day! 6 months from now, your own mother won’t be able to recognize you because of the transformation work that God will do it you!
